Acreage is the first term in the production equation; yield is the second and unknown until autumn. The March report, and the June Acreage report that revises it, therefore reset the entire new-crop balance sheet in one release.
Because corn and soybeans compete for the same ground, the report is read as a ratio as much as a level. A surprise shift of a million acres from beans to corn moves both contracts in opposite directions.
Example: expectations of 91.0 million corn acres and a print of 93.5 million adds roughly 2.5 million acres x 180 bushels = 450 million bushels of potential supply, which can take December corn down 20 cents, $1,000 per contract.
