Variable reward and dopamine

Unpredictable payoffs are the most habit-forming reward schedule there is, and trading is built on one.

Behaviour reinforced on an unpredictable schedule is learned fast and extinguishes slowly. Slot machines use this deliberately; markets produce it naturally, because wins arrive at unpredictable intervals and in unpredictable sizes.

Some platform design amplifies it: instant execution, constant price motion, notifications, streaks, confetti animations, and zero-commission access to the fastest-moving instruments. Short-dated options and high-leverage perpetuals compress the reward cycle to minutes, which is the schedule most likely to produce compulsive use.

This is not an argument that trading is gambling; it is an argument that the reinforcement mechanics are shared. Knowing that makes the structural defences - fixed sessions, limits, notifications off, longer holding periods - easier to take seriously. See near-miss-effect and trading-addiction.
