Gambling disorder warning signs

Recognised markers of gambling harm that apply directly to trading: chasing losses, escalating stakes, secrecy, borrowing, and failed attempts to stop.

Clinical criteria for gambling disorder describe behaviour rather than the activity, so they transfer to trading without adjustment. The commonly listed markers include needing larger stakes for the same excitement, restlessness or irritability when trying to cut back, repeated unsuccessful attempts to stop, preoccupation with the activity, trading when distressed, returning to recover losses, lying about the extent of it, damage to relationships or work, and relying on others for money to cover losses.

A few of these occasionally is not a diagnosis, and this entry is not one. The pattern that matters is several of them, persistently, with harm attached. Borrowing to trade, hiding losses from a partner, and repeated failed attempts to stop are the three most commonly reported early.

Diagnosis belongs to a qualified professional, and the problem responds to treatment. If reading the list was uncomfortable, that is worth taking seriously rather than arguing with. See problem-gambling-help.
