Guilt says I made a mistake; shame says I am the mistake. The second one is the problem, because it motivates hiding rather than correcting.
The sequence is predictable. A large loss, then concealment from partner or peers, then avoidance of the numbers, then a recovery attempt made alone and oversized because it also has to fix how you feel. That last step is where accounts end.
Interrupt it early with disclosure and specificity. Telling one person the actual figure removes most of the secrecy charge, and grading the execution rather than the outcome converts a verdict about you into a list of correctable behaviours. See accountability-partner.
